On March 16, 2021, a Twitter feud occurred between Candace Owens, a conservative American author, and Cardi B, an American rapper. After an escalatory exchange, Cardi B resurfaced an old tweet, claiming Owens’s husband cheated on her with her brother.
Owens responded by claiming the tweet was photoshopped. Still, Cardi stood by the tweet, claiming she witnessed it being posted on Owens’s Profile. Owens later released a 13 minute video on Instagram summarizing the entire interaction, declaring her intent to sue Cardi.
This is not the first time that the two have gotten into a “Twitter battle,” as indicated by Owens when she titled her Instagram video “Cardi B Round 2!” In September 2020, Candace Owens said that Joe Biden could have found someone more “intelligent” to have a conversation with than Cardi B, to which Cardi responded in likeness by criticizing Owens’s support of Trump. Among these criticisms, Cardi also tweeted a vulgar attack about Owens’s child.
On March 15, Owens appeared as a guest on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, and criticized Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “grotesque” performance at the Grammy Awards on March 14. Owens called it “an attack on American values . . . American traditions,” alongside several other comments regarding the performance. This prompted Cardi B to write “Yaaaayyyyyyy WE MADE FOX NEWS GUYS !! Wap wap wap,” on her own page, alongside a host of other tweets.
These exchanges led up to the ultimate conflict on March 16th.
Following the photoshopped tweet, Candace tweeted out “I am literally laughing out loud. Cardi. My dear. That is clearly a photoshopped tweet. Only one of us has a husband that sleeps around.”
The feud continued as Cardi claimed the tweet was legitimate, leading Owens to threaten a lawsuit.
“FYI I DO have a brother, a private citizen, who you are slandering right now with this photoshopped image that you are now publicly claiming you saw tweeted in real life. You want to admit you lied now, or get sued so I can expose you as a liar? I win either way” Owens tweeted on March 16.
The Twitter fight ended after that, but Candace Owens took to Instagram to summarize and conclude the situation. She explained that she saw the Grammy performance from Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion as “vulgar; it was disgusting. It was everything that I speak about in terms of saying that we have deteriorating culture.”
Owens ends the 13 minute video by stating: “Unfortunately for Cardi, the problem with having success is that just because you’re successful doesn’t mean you’re smart. Like, she’s gonna get sued. . . so Cardi, if anything, by the time we’re done with this, even though some lawyers are about to get involved, you will learn a lesson or two from Candace Owens.”
After being called out for deleting all relevant tweets, Cardi B tweeted “Actually I deleted all the tweets between us from the beginning because my platform is for fun and entertainment. The tweets between me & you was not entertaining anyone. It was getting boring. Get a life Candy it’s been two days.”
No details have been published about the lawsuit, but Candace Owens has vowed in several interviews that she will be following through with it, claiming that this was “not an idle threat.”
